It’s been almost one month since I’ve started to learn Toki Pona, and while I’m far from mastering it yet, I’m really happy I decided to give it a try. My learning process is a bit of a mess, I’m around lesson 8-9 of the official book, but I also read material from various other sources, and I’m using a couple of Anki decks and Increpare’s Toki Utala. I really like how things slowly make more sense, one day after the other, and how I’m able to understand what I read increasingly faster.

Since I’ve started, a lot has happened:

I set up this little forum. We’re just a handful and there’s not a lot of activity, but it feels great to have an online space dedicated to Toki Pona outside the usual big networks.
I’ve got my physical copy of the official book. I hate the fact it can only be found on Amazon (it’s actually published by Amazon) but I guess it was the simplest way to reach a broader audience. I like how the lessons are structured, even if I wish there were twice more examples and exercises.
I’ve developed (and I keep improving) my own interactive dictionary, which I’m using regularly. It’s interesting to make, handy for me, and I hope, useful to others.
I’ve met a bunch of Toki Pona enthusiasts, and they’re all lovely people. I had no idea I’d be conversing with a clown about of Toki Pona and how useful it is to “build mental models of the altered mindspace that is clown thought.”
I’ve got an old friend interested in learning the language, and we’re now having discussions about water kefir culture in Toki Pona. It’s a lot of fun and surprisingly effective.
Learning more about conlangs and language in general proved highly motivating. I’ve always seen learning a new language as a daunting, overwhelming task. Now I don’t, and I might explore this domain further at some point.
I have plenty of ideas for future projects involving Toki Pona. I’m not really “thinking” in Toki Pona yet, but I’m starting to see where it may lead, what it may change or open, and I love it.
